Why Shock Loss Happens After Hair Transplant—And Why You Shouldn’t Worry

Hi again, Murat here from Hair in Istanbul.
One of the most common concerns patients face after a hair transplant procedure is something called “shock loss.” The name may sound alarming, but rest assured—it’s completely normal, temporary, and actually a sign that your scalp is healing.

What Is Shock Loss After Hair Transplant?

Shock loss refers to the temporary shedding of both transplanted and surrounding natural hairs that can occur in the first few weeks after surgery. This usually happens between 2 to 6 weeks post-operation.

Here’s why:
Hair transplantation, even when done gently, introduces a degree of trauma to the scalp. In response, your hair follicles enter a resting phase (telogen), causing the attached hairs to fall out. While this may seem like a setback, it’s a normal part of the hair growth cycle.

The Good News: Follicles Stay Alive

Even though the hair shafts shed, the hair follicles remain intact under the skin. After the resting period, they begin producing new hair—often thicker and healthier than before.

  • New hair starts growing around month 3

  • Visible improvement by month 6

  • Full results usually appear by 12 months

So while it might look like you’re losing progress early on, what’s actually happening is your scalp resetting to grow stronger hair.
