Afro Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline

After an afro hair transplant, the small crusts usually settle within about 10 days, most transplanted hairs shed in the following weeks, new hair begins to grow after 3 to 4 months and the final result is generally visible after 12 to 18 months. Gentle washing and keeping tension off the grafts matter most along the way.

Timeline

What to expect, stage by stage

WhenWhat usually happens
Days 1 to 3Mild tightness, redness and some swelling of the forehead are common. You sleep with your head raised and avoid touching the grafts.
Days 4 to 10Small crusts form around each graft and loosen with gentle washing. In coiled hair they can hold on a little longer, so patience matters more than force.
Weeks 2 to 6Most transplanted hairs shed. This is normal: the follicles stay in place beneath the skin.
Months 1 to 3The area can look like it did before the transplant. Some existing hair nearby may also shed temporarily.
Months 3 to 6New hair starts to grow, often fine at first, with your natural curl developing as it gets longer.
Months 6 to 12Hair thickens and density builds. Curly hair can take a little longer to show its full shape.
Months 12 to 18The final result is generally visible.

Aftercare for afro hair

Looking after textured hair while it heals

Gentle washing

The grafted area is washed with a light dabbing motion, never rubbed, combed or twisted, until your doctor confirms the grafts are secure. The method is shown to you at the clinic.

No tension

Braids, locs, extensions, tight headwear and adhesives stay away from the grafts while they settle. Later, styling is kept gentle on the hairline to protect the result.

Products and moisture

Oils, creams and styling products wait until your doctor approves them. Once healed, keeping the scalp and new hair moisturised helps curly hair grow comfortably.

Normal or not?

Common changes and when to contact us

Usually normal: mild itching, temporary numbness, shedding of transplanted hair, temporary shock loss of nearby hair and a few small pimple-like bumps as new hair pushes through, which can be more common with curly hair.

Contact us and send photos if you notice: bumps that are painful, spreading or not improving, a raised or thickening scar, or any change that worries you.

Clinical note

Increasing pain, swelling, warmth, discharge or fever can be signs of infection. See a local doctor straight away and let our team know.

FAQ

Afro hair transplant recovery: common questions

How long does recovery take after an afro hair transplant?

Most people return to light daily activities within a few days. The crusts usually settle within about 10 days, new hair starts to grow after 3 to 4 months, and the final result is generally visible after 12 to 18 months.

Is it normal for transplanted hair to fall out?

Yes. Most transplanted hairs shed within the first weeks. The follicles stay in place beneath the skin and begin to grow new hair a few months later.

How should I wash afro hair after a transplant?

Follow the washing method shown to you at the clinic. In general, the grafted area is washed gently with a light dabbing motion, without rubbing, combing or twisting, until your doctor confirms the grafts are secure.

What is shock loss?

Shock loss is temporary shedding of existing hair around the treated area, caused by the stress of the procedure. In most cases this hair grows back within a few months.

Are small bumps or pimples normal?

Small, pimple-like bumps can appear as new hairs push through the skin, especially with curly hair. Mild cases usually settle, but tell us if they are painful, spreading or not improving, and send photos.

When can I exercise again?

Light walking is usually fine soon after the procedure. Heavy exercise, swimming and sauna wait longer. Your written aftercare gives the timing for your case.
